Reading with Ataturk


Another feature of the Central Library of Istanbul University is that Atatürk was advantage from the library’s book. The books are read by Atatürk by borrowing from library when he came to İstanbul constitutes a private collection. These books were revitalized in three dimensional. Rare Works Library with the reading with Atatürk project prepared in 2012.

Works of Suleiman the Magnificent reunited with readers with the virtual library technology with the cooperation between İU and Teknosa.

Rare works as “Divan-ı Muhibbi”, “Beyan-ı Menazil-i Sefer-i Irakeyn”, “Kitab-ı Bahriye” sole copies of which are only exist in the İstanbul University Rare Works Library were reunited with the large masses in digital media.

Abdülhamit Era Maps: New Perspectıve Project To The Old World


With this project, besides bringing valuable and rare maps and users together through digitizing and not to being harmed, handing down the next generations in the best way, it will be also prevented to make the manuscripts wear out more.

Within this context 1350 maps’ digitizing process is completed. When the sole copy and the chosen samples which has international historical value are allowed to access in virtual library; it will be the historical gate opening to the world in perpetual access in 21st century of the earth whose, geographical and physical borders are changed.

Within Istanbul University Digital Library project ” the New Look at the Old World : II. Abdulhamid Period Maps and Plans Virtual Library “project was put in operation. In this context, of about 789 pieces of map collection whose call numbers and bibliographic studies ahve been completed only 120 copies selected to be digitized and having historical value selected is opened to access the virtual library.

Information Center for (Dis)abled People

Information Service for disabled people which begins to serve in 2012, primarily serves to different types of disabled students studying in İstanbul University, the other disabled students in the country and all of the researchers. The center is opened in the aim of supporting the students who have visually handicapped and hearing impaired have more productive education.

10 computers, in the each computers there are voice readout, screen magnifier program, 6 devices which enable to use computer with Braille alphabet, mice which can be controlled with foot and wrist for disabled students, 1 Braille printer, 2 hand-out reading machine, 1 professional scanner using for produce e-book and photocopy machine, 2 graphic printing machine, 2 text magnifier and 2 sound studio for the purpose of producing audiobook are located in the center.

Information center gives service to provide e-book, creating audiobook, printout and book delivery with Braille alphabet, graphic and cartouche delivery according to disabled students’ needs and wishes.

Pre-letter revolution works dated 1934 exist in the Rare Works Library depended on the central library. The oldest collection of the Central Library, around 65.000 volumes, consists of Turkish, Arabic, Persian, Latin and other languages press and writing books, magazines, newspapers, photo albums, maps and notes. Moreover, 911 albums called II. Abdülhamit Collection and 36.585 photographs contained in the album exist in the Rare Works Library. As well as, items related with books and writing tools and materials were exhibited in the Rare Works Library. These rare publications are edited with the latest technology and digitalize and offered to the service for users in the library.
