İstanbul University Library and Documentation Department opened its archive of 55 local and national newspapers published between 1928-1942 within the scope of the "Gaze to History" Project.
In addition to its valuable and rich collections, İstanbul University’s Central Library continues to be the only research university library that has the quality of a compilation and is an important library with its service quality. Various projects have been carried out by the Library and Documentation Department for the purpose of protecting valuable works in the Central Library and Rare Works Library collection, preventing their wear and tear, making their use widespread, transferring cultural heritage safely to future generations and promoting national / international. One of these important projects was the Project of History from the Newspaper.
Precious Newspapers see Daylight
The collection, which is in the Central Library collection and is a cultural treasure, contains approximately 18 thousand 422 volumes of newspapers. The Central Library publishes newspapers in various languages such as Ottoman Turkish, Greek, Bulgarian, French, German, English and Modern Turkish.
Newspaper Look History Project, which has been going on for about two years and contains an intense effort; The valuable newspaper archive, which was worn out and physically difficult to access, shed light on the history of the period, and was brought to life with the aim of bringing it together with the researcher through an integrated library automation system. Also; With this project, it was also aimed to bring the valuable newspapers in the collection to the light, to raise awareness and bring them together with all concerned, to enable researchers to access elite newspapers from anywhere and easily in a virtual environment, to protect the collection to future generations and to prevent further wear of the works.
55 Local and National Newspapers Opened to Access
Within the scope of the "A Look to History Project"; 32 titles from 581 thousand 106 pages of local and national newspapers in 55 different titles published between 1928 and 1942 were made accessible to users through the Integrated Library Automation System by scanning with the OCR technique and bibliographic imprint studies. Newspapers whose technical procedures are completed within the scope of the ongoing project continue to be transferred to the system.
